Female circumcision

I found this on youtube, it is Egyptian women being interviewed about this, you will hear the bad news (utter ignorance and acceptance) but of course the good news is that the media, among others, it appears are trying to educate.

Aren't you pleased to hear that anaesthetic is not required, you just sit in warm water and no pain - wonder when the west are going to catch up with their medical knowledge?????:mad:
 
I would like to bow out of this thread now. I have my plan of action but to be honest a mixture of being back in the liberated west and this thread (well what the issue is doing to my head) has seen my character plummet in the last few days and I don't like it. I thought I had given up being a rebel in my teens but clearly it still lurks beneath the surface. Time to remember who I am and who I want to be.

May I thank everyone for their interest and support, I have been so touched by your comments of support and friendship. There really are some special people on CR and I thank G-d for you all.

MW, what you brought up on this thread is not, I repeat NOT, some product of leftover teenage rebellion. It is a genuine, heartfelt, adult concern. And one that should be addressed.

Oh my goodness, my dear friends. I wasn't talking about my reaction to this issue being rebellious - I hope if I ever got to be 100 years years old I am still 'rebelling' against such things. When we stop caring about our fellow man, we become part of the problem, right?

It was just that I noticed on a couple of threads my tone has changed, I am more aggresive, more ...... well just not myself. I would love to know if it is being back in the west or just this issue that has made my brain regress or perhaps it is a little of both? Either way, I don't like it.

I try to use reason, compassion and logic (what I have of it :)) to discuss with people and it is time I return to that 'self'.

hello, i just got started, me and my little girl were reading your quote. I apologise but that is world domination and control issues. I know you can't ask why the men are not castrated when hurting someone, all i know is when something like that happens to a women from a man's perspective that is being afraid of power and want them to suffer and be lower than them. i feel your pain good topic:(

Thank you Sag and welcome to CR. You are absolutely correct, it is simply about the control of women and must be stopped. The tide is turning, albeit slowly, just the fact that it is so openly discussed now shows change. Too late for some but hopefully their daughters or granddaughters will not be subjected to the same mental and physical abuse.

:eek::eek: OMG they are doing it here as well :mad:. Thank you TE I had not seen this article. I am delighted the government are taking such a strong stand against this barbaric practice. I liked this statement:

"This is child abuse. It is not an attack on anyone's culture, it is an attack on anyone who commits this horrendous abuse of children."

Unfortunately though this is also very true:


One London youth worker within the Somali community said this was so ingrained that she had even come across young women who had wanted to be circumcised. "You want to be part of the community," said Leyla Hussein. "You want to be married, and you don't want to be considered dirty."

I have spoken with young girls who think I am some sort of crazy european trollop because I don't think they should have this done. I suppose to them it is like saying don't go to the dentist, it makes no sense to them and they cannot see the abuse side of things because it is so culturally ingrained and promoted as 'purity'.

What a brilliant article, thanks. Yes it is extremely accurate.

They have captured the problems we face in the future brilliantly. For years people have spouted that it is an Islamic practice, now that argument has been removed they will fall back on the custom and practice argument. That is despite the fact that the Quran says do not do something just because your fathers did it - hey ho.

It is also correct that it is a taboo subject, when I was discussing it with my husband he looked incredibly uncomfortable and tried for days to avoid talking about it. It is just something that the men support but is a 'woman's thing', men don't talk about it.

My sister in law has said she will do it to her daughter regardless of whether it is illegal. This is one of the difficulties, without the education you just drive it into kitchens with dirty knives. I was amazed to read in the article that a girl had received anaesthetic, this is not the norm, usually in the poor areas it is just grit your teeth and pray.

I am so happy to read that for once the government hasn't just talked a good fight but is actually fighting this one. I pray the message filters down quickly. What they need to do is find some older, non egyptian Muslim role models that are prepared to stand up and say I was never circumcised and I am not a lesbian or slut (which is the great fear).

This is so true and not just in egypt:

“The Koran is a newcomer to tradition in this manner,” she said. “As a male society, the men took parts of religion that satisfied men and inflated it. The parts of the Koran that helped women, they ignored.”
 
I had no idea that this was going on, in fact I probably would have missed this thread if Flow didn't post anything. It's horrible the kinds of things that women have been and are still subjected to. If you feel more aggressive in some topics that's because you're feeling rather passionate about it. Don't let anyone discourage you. It's this passion that makes changes happen.

I have heard about how there's an increasing number of people in the middle east wanting to change some of the current policies finding them oppresive. I wish that more action would be taken sooner. It's a bad habit for people to just pick and choose what things they believe from holy books. Perhaps, the fact that these issues are being brought up, means a change is coming to the middle east that will push for equal treatment of all of it's people. After all, change happened in western countries because people pushed for change, because the issue wouldn't be kept quiet.

That is certainly correct Leafblade, largely because of the internet and satellite tv. The young now see life outside the mid east and want to live more like westerners. The older generations are terrified because they think the young want to open up disco's, start sleeping around and getting drunk. The young I speak to have no such ideas, they love Islam but they want, as every generation does, to establish their own boundaries.

For 96% of egyptian woman this barbaric mutilation is a reality and people really do believe that it makes a girl 'quiet' This comes from upbringing and mental attitude, not mutilating the body.

There are two sides to this coin. If you look at Iraq the women there actually had the greatest equality of any Muslim Arab country prior to the war. The new draft constitution sends them right back to the middle ages, removing many of their rights. So the attempt to force democracy on Iraq is going to backfire for the women, as it has done in Afghanistan.

Democracy must come from within, from public pressure, not be forced onto a nation. This is happening in the mid east, things just work more slowly there. :)

You are right, In western countries 100 years ago women had no rights, people owned slaves and homosexuals were put in prison. I imagine the first people to fight against these issues were seen as nutcases.

Insh'allah things will change for the better for the Arab countries and the women who are treated so badly.
