Another Media "Star" Passed

Rollin Massamino passed away at the tender age of 82.

"Who?" you ask?

He was the coach for Villanova when they beat Georgetown to win the NCAA championship in spite of being eight-point underdogs back in 1985 (one of, if not the biggest upset in NCAA history.) He was still coaching college basketball roughly up until his death.

Richard Anderson passed away at the tender age of 91.

"Who?" you ask?

Some of you might remember him as Oscar Goldman on The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman back in the early 1970s. He was in quite a number of others (close to 190 roles) too, plus he had a couple of rather famous in-laws: Alan Ladd, Norma Shearer and Irving Thalberg.

Walter Becker passed away at the tender age of 67 of an undisclosed illness.

"Who?" you ask?

You might be familiar with one of his bands: Steely Dan. G!d/dess, I feel old with each death of musicians from my misspent youth. :(

Didn't they record some great music in the '80s, too? True, not as well-known as their stuff from the '70s, but...

Phyllis Sidhe_Uaine
True that. Steely Dan officially disbanded in '81 I believe, but reunited around '93. They toured regularly together up until about 2003. After that it was mostly a solo effort, but they did manage to release some new tunes along the way. I've always considered Becker and Fagen more studio musicians than live performers though.

Earl 'Wya' Lindo — keyboards for The Wailers, passed this week.

Don Williams passed away at the tender age of 78 and Blake Heron died at the tender age of 35.

"Who?" you ask?

Don Williams was a Country Music Hall of Fame member (anyone who knows country music [the genre] would be at least vaguely familiar with the name) and Blake Heron was a child actor who was rather popular in the 1990s.

Len Wein passed away at the tender age of 69.

"Who?" you ask?

He created some little-known comic book characters: Wolverine, Swamp Thing, Nightcrawler, Storm, Colossus plus a few others. He worked for both DC and Marvel comics as both an illustrator and an editor, plus he was involved in the American animated film industry as well as the live-action "comic book" film industry.

He was also a member of the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame.

He was a producer for NBC, first working for ABC, with a break in his stint with NBC running his own broadcasting company. He came up with the phrase "Must See TV" during his second stint with NBC, bringing Friends, Will and Grace, ER and other "sophisticated" shows to NBC during the mid-1990s through his tenure.

He worked together with Chet Forte, Howard Cosell, Don Meredith and Frank Gifford back in 1972 on Monday Night Football (It was one of his first productions.)

You might be familiar with his "stage" name: Bobby "The Brain" Heenan, of WWE/WCW/WWF wrestling fame. He started in "the ring" back in the 1960s, continuing in some fashion for roughly four decades as a wrestler, a "manager" and a commentator. He worked with the late Andre the Giant, Ric Flair, The Undertaker, and numerous others over his career.
