Hey all.

We've done books. We've done movies. And I felt the need to create a new thread, so here it is. For those of you who do play video games, console or pc, even little flash things, what've you been playing? How is it? Etc?

Currently I'm playing Final Fantasy IX for the original playstation. It's my first time all the way through. I really like all of the allusions to previous games as well as the ones to world mythology that fans of the series are so familiar with, and I think the existential questions of identity and meaning that it tackles are dealt with in such a way that keep them contextually fresh throughout the game.

I'm replaying Final Fantasy VI for SNES on a special anthology disk that was released for playstation. I don't think I ever played it all the way through. I have to say that the issues in this game are much less psychological, although at times the drama can get very personal for the individual characters. But the biggest conflict so far seems to be about the abuse of power by an empire and the lengths they'll go in persecuting an "other" to gain greater power and the resistance that forms in response to this.

Since April I've been playing Second Life, a Massively Multiplayer Online Game which is essentially open ended, do whatever you want, be whatever you want, create whatever you want, limited only by your skills and imagination. Lately I've been taking the house my girlfriend and I share there and adding secret rooms and trap doors and steam-powered-teleports and such. I'm also trying to create things a little bit more, not one of my strong points, although just today I did make a meditation bowl and then, using a free script I found and a sound I uploaded, made it sound when clicked. I think I'm going to get one of the scripters I know to create a script for me that will make it sound on the hour.

Oh, and I really really really want a Wii. I think it's going to be a paradigm breaker for video game consoles. But I'm going to wait until they're available, at the very least, at their sale price, if not until they've been marked down.

So, any gamers out there? <crickets chirp>

Hi Dauer,
More of a console gamer myself, recently bought an xbox 360. I play Call Of Duty 3 and Gears Of War at the moment. I used to play alot of PC games but I got fed up with the PC's crashing, freezing and having to install patches and anti hack tools etc. Consoles for games for me! although half life is a classic game in itself on the PC as well as final fantasy series. Happy gaming!

Any gamers out there? I live and breathe games... I guess Gaming can be considered my religion... Gaming is top of my priorty lists :)

Breath of Fire (both 1 and 2), Final Fantasy ([American]III, IV, and V), Chrono Trigger (I'm having some difficulties with it), the 7th Saga (a bit of trouble with it, too), Tetris 2 and Tetris Attack, Terranigma (have to get back to it and conquer the first boss in the Upper World), Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (just started) and Live A Live (killed six times already [grrr]). I have more that a couple of my friends gave me to try out, but I'll have to wait.

BoF series ain't bad... I suppose. Chrono Trigger, now thats a game :D I wanted to marry the princess as a kid ;\ she's hot.

GTA San Andreas, the new Civilization, Empire Earth, Hot Shots Fore on PS2 (golf).

How's Bully?

Chris

Chronotrigger's one of my all time favs too. I've played through it all probably three times. That's on the anthology too. Square released I think three anthologies of FF games and CT was included on one of them for the psx. Being a huge FF fan I picked up two of them, and when ps2 was backwards compatible I was very delighted. I also loved Mario RPG. I thought it was amazingly well done, because honestly, mario in an rpg could have been terrible. But I thought it was great.

I had been playing San Andreas for a while. Never finished the game. But I did unlock the whole map. I'd really lilke to see how bully compares. It seems like it would be refreshing compared to the GTA series, based on what I've read, although still thematically similar, as well as very similar gameplay of course.

Hey Flow,

Remember when it was all pinball? Remember workin' the table but trying not to tilt?

BTW, I'm lovin' my ping pong table!

Chris

Well, the last mission on San Andreas is a real bugger. It's a good idea to complete the fire truck side missions to make CJ fireproof. I didn't do that the first time through, and I barely made it out of the crack house with like a second to spare.

I was wondering how Scarface compares to GTA?

Chris

I've heard that Scarface is better, and I can imagine that the game would really only have to be as good as GTA to be better, since it's Scarface. But I haven't played it. I heard things. I heard things.

In CT, I'm stuck trying to catch the fooking rat that gives the password (you recall the rat "statue" that you first see before the Guardian fight/retrieval of the seed from the corpse? That one.) I get just so, ready to "pounce", and it gets away right when I go from "dash" to "pounce"..

Frustrated is the mildest term for my feelings on this.

Phyllis,

You mean in the future? If you're really stuck in CT, for classic rpgs, I've found this website very helpful (not to mention nostalgic.) This is their CT shrine:

RPGClassics - Chrono Trigger

But they would also have separate shrines for the other classic rpgs you're playing.

Hi Chris:

Used to work on a university campus and every lunch hour we went to the bar next door and played pinball on a Guick Draw machine. I bought a used one for home and spent many hours of relaxation listening to Todd Rundgren (especially Utopia) while playing Quick Draw. But my son held the machine record of about 250,000 (which is as it should be) last time I checked years ago.

flow....:p

Yup, I'm stuck in the past..no video games, no x 3iii boxes. Me and the kids play foosball, ping pong, canasta, gin, euchre, wist, cashflow, wits and wagers, boggle, cranium, chess, darts... of course at Mom's house...they have 7 TVs and play it all.... its a balance.

I have to admit, the reason I've stayed away from v-games is my awareness of my totally addictive personality...CR is vice enough for me.

Dauer,

I was finally able to catch the rat, after trying for six months (I just had to "train" my fingers to react faster, which is a pain in the rump roast.) I'm "back" in "the present" and have to face off against the first, if not only, boss in the cave to the west.

Anyway, I have had the main site bookmarked for several months (it helped a bit with some of the maps they have on some of the sites, since I tend to get lost rather easily.)

How's Bully?

Nice avatar ;) Bully... Could be better, They made it more "soft" because of some ... "people" whining and complaining about how games corrupt youth! It was to be an 18!! youth shouldn't freaking have it!! Parents are to blame not games... lol... But yeah the 'time clock' that keeps track of days could be slowed down to make the gameplay longer as there is so much to do... Help fellow students cause mayhem or help them get girls or help them not to be picked on. Go chill out at a take away place or fun fair or mess around in the mental asylum or old folkes home... Can get jobs such as paper round and so on.. play in the arcades.... tons of good stuff. Go out shopping for new clothes or bikes. Loads of classes English (You can learn how to sweet talk girls and appologise more effectiveley to bullies/teachers), Science (can learn to make weapons, cherry bombs/stink bombs/so on), Sports (learn more fighting moves and become faster stronger, also playing dodge ball increases your accuracy with your catapult.) Shop (learn to repair bikes and are awarded bikes for completing the classes.) Art (increase your sweet talking even more and can win extra clothes.) Photography (can take more shots, can zoom and final award is a digital camera.)

Pacman is dead, get over it.

I was wondering how Scarface compares to GTA?

Haven't played GTA:SA for years... Good game obviously the best out of the series... Alas I await the next one this coming November... should be the bomb...

Compared to Scarface? Obviously there is a lot more to do... With games such as Scarface or the Godfather... Your simply playing out the movie.. with SMALL amounts of extra story... Game play then is predictable and limited....

Word.

Well, I completed Final Fantasy IX and the ending was great. I was a little disappointed with one part of it, where I think they essentially gave the audience what they wanted, instead of being a little edgier (although giving the audience what they wanted also meant fitting more closely to an additional mythos, so I guess it was a trade-off.) Overall though, great ending, tear-jerker. And just beautiful, really. I don't want to give anything away so I won't say more, but the whole game was very well done.

I still have to finish FFVII and I've finally gotten my first final fantasy game for the ps2, FFX, due in the mail by the end of the week. It's actually my first ps2 rpg. It's only selling for about 19.99 now, and I heard good things. I'll see how it goes.
